Cari amici di Voice of the Faithful,

è stata presentata una proposta sul ruolo della donna nel ministero e nella gestione ecclesiale al National Representative Council che verrà distribuita a tutti i membri per raccogliere i loro feedback. La proposta è sintetizzata qui di seguito e contiene anche le ragioni per il “pro” e per il “contro”. Alla fine ci sono alcune domande alle quali rispondere con “si” o “no”, per semplificare l’analisi dei risultati. C’è inoltre uno spazio apposito per i vostri commenti. Siamo molto interessati alla vostra opinione in merito. Grazie per il vostro impegno in Voice of the Faithful.

I. LA RISOLUZIONE

INTENTO DI PROPORRE UN RIESAME DELLA CHIESA UNIVERSALE SUL RUOLO DELLA DONNA NEL MINISTERO E NELLA GESTIONE DELLA CHIESA

Giacché, la nostra chiesa è tutto il Popolo di Dio; e

Giacché, il futuro della fede che professiamo dipende da una struttura di base che contempli tutte le voci e i talenti presenti nel Popolo di Dio; e

Giacché, noi sottoscriviamo la missione di VOTF (offrire una voce, attenta allo Spirito, attraverso la quale il fedele possa partecipare attivamente alla gestione e alla guida della chiesa cattolica) con un terzo ulteriore obiettivo (supportare il cambiamento strutturale all’interno della chiesa cattolica; e

Giacché Voice of the Faithful fin dalla fondazione ha identificato diversi fattori che possono aver contribuito al perpetuarsi di abusi sessuali ai danni dei bambini e alla copertura dei fatti, come anche all’assenza di donne nella leadership ecclesiastica;

Giacché, eliminare i futuri abusi della gerarchia dipende dall’implementazione di questi fattori identificati da Voice of the Faithful; e

Giacché la ricerca della giustizia per le vittime, perseguita da Voice of the Faithful invita a ricercare la giustizia in tutta la chiesa; e

Giacché esiste una tendenza sbagliata nella chiesa che marginalizza la voce laica e in generale la voce delle donne, come anche i carismi particolari;

SI PROPONE QUANTO SEGUE:

Voice of the Faithful suggerisce un riesame e una riforma generale della chiesa, del ruolo delle donne sia nel ministero che nella gestione della chiesa stessa.

II. “Pro” e “Contro”

I sostenitori di questa Risoluzione hanno chiesto al nostro Consiglio Nazionale di distribuirla a tutti i membri di VOTF, per incoraggiare la discussione e raccogliere le risposte. I vostri rappresentanti nazionali hanno discusso questa Risoluzione per mesi e si sono consultati con i responsabili di VOTF e i membri del Consiglio di Amministrazione. Ne sono derivate una serie di opinioni diverse sia sui vantaggi che sugli svantaggi conseguenti al fatto di rendere tale Risoluzione parte della politica ufficiale di VOTF. Qui appresso riportiamo un sommario degli argomenti a supporto della Risoluzione (Pro) e a detrimento (Conto). Leggete attentamente ciascuno di essi prima di dare il vostro feedback ai rappresentanti nazionali.

PRO:

Gesù ha chiamato tutti gli esseri umani a seguirlo e a portare gli altri alla sua sequela. Ha chiamato in particolare molte donne tra i suoi seguaci. Per molti secoli la cultura ha relegato le donne in ruoli marginali. E’ tempo che i vari doni riservati alle donne trovino piena realizzazione a servizio della chiesa, incoraggiando il loro supporto e l’utilizzo delle loro qualità innate in nome di un vangelo di giustizia. Quando nacque VOTF, l’assenza di donne impegnate, formate e predisposte per la leadership nella chiesa, è stato un fattore significativo nell’incidenza delle coperture degli abusi del clero sui minori. Le donne di oggi non sono ancora le benvenute nei consigli direttivi sia a livello diocesano che universale, e neanche in molte parrocchie. La giustizia richiede che la voce di più della metà della popolo della chiesa venga universalmente riconosciuta e ascoltata. Questa risoluzione è un invito per tutta la chiesa a riesaminare la storia evoluta della disciplina ecclesiastica che ha limitato il ruolo della donna nella chiesa cattolica romana, e non può essere in alcun modo racchiusa solo nella ordinazione presbiterale femminile. Questa risoluzione è in linea con i contenuti del Concilio Vaticano II che premeva affinché venisse riconosciuto un ruolo maggiore alle donne nella chiesa: “Dato che nel nostro tempo le donne hanno una parte sempre più rilevante nella vita sociale, è fondamentale che partecipino più ampiamente ai vari campi dell’apostolato ecclesiale” (Decreto sull’Apostolato dei Laici, par. 9).

CONTRO:

Questa risoluzione non riguarda i nostri pareri personali sul ruolo della donna, ma piuttosto come VOTF possa raggiungere i suoi tre obiettivi primari (sostenere le vittime, richiedere una selezione di preti moralmente integri, il cambiamento strutturale). Sebbene questo possa rientrare nel terzo obiettivo, sembra essere un punto separato, un nuovo obiettivo. Storicamente, i fondatori di VOTF hanno deciso a maggioranza di non prendere posizione su temi potenzialmente controversi. Nonostante molti membri di VOTF sostengono una piena riforma del ruolo femminile nella chiesa e lavorano per questa causa nell’organizzazione, farne una politica di VOTF sembra andare oltre i nostri propositi e può ostacolare il nostro lavoro sugli obiettivi primari.

La risoluzione non suggerisce direttamente l’ordinazione delle donne, non c’è altro ruolo che al momento sia proibito alle donne al di fuori del presbiterato. I ruoli decisionali che vengono negati alle donne sono quelli legati all’ordinazione. E’ evidente che l’opinione pubblica vedrà in questo una battaglia per l’ordinazione delle donne, a prescindere da quanto possiamo protestare. La missione e gli obiettivi di VOTF non comprendono l’ineguaglianza delle donne considerata separatamente dalla marginalizzazione dei laici in genere. Se VOTF approva questa risoluzione si discosterà dai temi legati ai tre obiettivi principali.

C’è la necessità che la nostra chiesa dia a TUTTI i laici una voce nei processi decisionali. Il clericalismo (per cui molti preti si sentono una classe privilegiata, quindi, in molti casi abusano del proprio potere restando impuniti) ha creato un clima in cui l’abuso sessuale può essere portato a termine e poi coperto. Se ci focalizziamo sulla preparazione dei laici, affinché divengano una voce autentica ed impegnata nella chiesa, questo significherà la piena inclusione di donne e uomini.

III. ASPETTIAMO I VOSTRI FEEDBACK

Prima che il Consiglio Nazionale di VOTF metta al voto la Risoluzione, gradiremmo ricevere le vostre opinioni e idee al riguardo, in qualità di membri di VOTF.

Dopo attento esame e discussione sulla Risoluzione, vi chiediamo di formulare le vostre risposte alle considerazioni indicate. Per facilitare la raccolta dei dati, per favore rispondete al questionario che segue con al massimo una o due parole, es. “si” o “no”. RESOLUTION TO CALL FOR CHURCH-WIDE RE-EXAMINATION

Dear Voice of the Faithful Friends,

A proposal on the role of women in Church Ministry and Governance has been presented to the National Representative Council and is now being distributed to the membership for their input. The resolution is below, and is followed by some typical reasons for and against the resolution. At the end are several questions which can be answered "yes" or "no" for easy analysis. There is also space for your comments. We are most interested in your opinions on this issue. Thank you for your commitment to Voice of the Faithful.

I. THE RESOLUTION

RESOLUTION TO CALL FOR CHURCH-WIDE RE-EXAMINATION OF THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN CHURCH MINISTRY AND CHURCH GOVERNANCE

Whereas, our Church is the entire People of God; and

Whereas, the future of the Faith we are called to sustain is dependent upon a supporting structure inclusive of the voices and talents of all the People of God; and

Whereas, we affirm the VOTF mission statement (to provide a prayerful voice, attentive to the Spirit, through which the Faithful can actively participate in the governance and guidance of the Catholic Church) and third goal (to support structural change within the Catholic Church); and

Whereas Voice of the Faithful at our founding identified several factors that may have contributed to the sexual abuse of children and an attendant cover-up, including the absence of women across the spectrum of leadership in our Church;

Whereas, the deterrence of future abuses by the hierarchy is dependent on addressing those contributing factors identified by Voice of the Faithful at its founding; and

Whereas Voice of the Faithful’s pursuit of justice for survivors invites the pursuit of justice throughout our Church; and

Whereas there is within our Church a structural fault line in the marginalization of the lay voice in general and women’s voices and gifts in particular;

THEREFORE, IT IS RESOLVED THAT:

Voice of the Faithful calls for a Church-wide re-examination and reform of the role of women in Church ministry and in the governance of the Church.

II. PROS & CONS

The supporters of this Resolution have asked your National Council Representative(s) (NRC) to distribute the Resolution to the VOTF membership, to encourage discussion and gather responses. Your NRC representatives have been discussing this Resolution for many months, and have consulted with VOTF Officers and members of the Board of Trustees. Many diverse opinions on the merits and the disadvantages of voting to make the Resolution an official policy of VOTF have been articulated. Noted below is an abbreviated summary of arguments that support the Resolution (PROS) and arguments that do not support the Resolution (CONS). Please consider each before giving feedback to your NRC representative.

PROS:

Jesus called all human beings to follow him and to draw others to him. He especially called women to be among his followers. For many centuries the culture has delegated women to subservient roles in church leadership and decision-making. Now is the time for the many gifts of women to be fully exercised in the service of the Church, by resolving to encourage inquiry and support for women’s many, diverse and untried abilities in the name of gospel justice. In the earliest days of VOTF, the absence of educated, lay women leaders in governing positions within the Church was identified as a significant factor in the incidence and the subsequent cover up of clergy sexual abuse of children. A discussion of women’s roles in the Church can lead to cracks in the clerical culture. Today women are not welcomed members in policy-making councils on the diocesan or universal Church levels, nor in many parishes. Justice demands that the voice of over half of the Church's population needs to be more fully recognized as called and gifted to lead, be heard and be read within the universal Church. This resolution is a call for the whole church to reexamine the evolved history of church discipline that limits the role of women in the Roman Catholic Church, and cannot be summarized as a call for women’s ordination. This resolution is also in keeping with the second Vatican Council’s call for a greater role for women in the church: “Since in our times women have an ever more active share in the whole life of society, it is very important that they participate more widely also in the various fields of the church’s apostolate” (Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity, Paragraph 9).

CONS:

This resolution is NOT about our personal beliefs about women’s role in church ministry, but rather whether VOTF should expand its three goals (support of victims, support of priests of integrity, and structural change). Although some people might see this as implied in our third goal on structural change, it really seems to be adding a new goal. Historically, the founders of VOTF wisely decided not to take positions on potentially controversial issues. Although many in VOTF readily support reform of women’s role in the church and actively work on this cause through other organizations, making a policy statement on this appears to go beyond VOTF’s founding purpose and can dilute our work on our primary goals. Although the resolution does not directly call for women’s ordination, there is no church role that women aren’t fully involved in OTHER than priesthood. The only decision-making roles that women do not have are those tied to ordination. The public will quickly see this as a call for women’s ordination, no matter how much we protest. VOTF’s mission and goals do not encompass the inequality of women separate from the marginalization of all laypersons. If VOTF passes this resolution it will distract from the other good things we are about that tie more directly to our three goals. There is a need in our church to give ALL the laity a meaningful voice in decision-making. Clericalism (in which some priests see themselves as a privileged class and, therefore, able to abuse power with impunity) created a climate in which sexual abuse could be perpetrated and covered up. If we focus on empowering the laity to be an authentic and educated voice in the Church, full inclusion of all women and men will follow.

III. SEEKING YOUR INPUT

Before the National Representative Council of VOTF votes on accepting or rejecting this Resolution, we hope to hear the opinions and ideas of VOTF membership.

After careful examination and discussion on this Resolution, we request that you formulate your responses with these considerations in mind. In the interests of our ability to collate data, please answer the questions below with one or two word answers, i.e. “yes” or “no.” Feel free at the end to add your comments up to 250 words.

If you belong to an Affiliate of VOTF, please share this document with other members of your Affiliate, arrange meetings for group study and discussion, and then submit your Affiliate’s responses. If you are an individual member of VOTF who does not belong to an Affiliate, we ask that you reflect on the Resolution and submit any comments you choose. Again, please confine those comments to 250 words.
